Travel in 2017

Travel is probably my favorite thing in the world besides photography.

A cell phone photo from our first trip to the Big Island

The big trip this year will be back to the big island of Hawaii. What is most exciting for me is we will be spending a night in Volcano National Park! I want to start doing some night photography, especially if we get a great night in the park. This will also allow for more hiking and explore more of the park. I cannot wait! We will start planning more in the coming months. I really want to focus on my travel and night photography and bring back some of my best images.

Plus we can stock up on Kona coffee. I might have to see how much to ship it all home.

This summer is another baseball trip, which means we will go see the Diamondbacks play somewhere other than home. We haven’t picked a destination yet but Atlanta, New York, or Philadelphia. We have recently been to New York, and I’d love to go back, but I think we will end up at one of the other cities. Miami may also be an option.

And yes, we go for baseball, but will also site see and I will find something to take photos of. And eat. We always find good, local places to eat at.

Lastly, we will make our third trip to Vegas in three years. Vegas will have an NHL team and we will have to go see the Coyotes play there. Yes, we may like sports a bit in this household. I also hope the game coincides with the Rock N Roll Marathon there, as I’d like to run the strip at night (yup, I am also a weirdo runner). Each time I’ve been to Vegas I have taken very few photos. It’s one of those places where I don’t feel comfortable taking out the camera and just shooting.

I’m not sure if we will get anywhere else but I am always down for travel, especially if I get to see something new. My life goals include checking off every MLB stadium, NHL arena, and US National Park. I have plans to make an art project where we can mark off each one visited but I haven’t worked out the idea yet. I may have to find an already made map(s) of the states and then draw something to represent the team or park.

Part of 2017 will be pushing myself out of my photography comfort zone.

I plan to try new photography techniques, get more creative with my compositions and editing, and better at storytelling. I want to find unique angles. I want to do more of a raw emotional photo series. I want to work on street photography. I don’t want to be afraid to have my camera out and shooting. I sometimes feel shy and insecure and as if everyone is looking at me and judging me. I need to let that go.

I want my travel photography is going to be a mix of raw emotion, street and landscape photography. It will help me get over my insecurities. I want my travel photos to not only stand alone but together tell a story.
