I’m not a fashionista, but I’ve always had an interest in fashion, even if it’s mostly running clothes. I firmly believe you should wear what makes you feel comfortable, both mentally and physically. I want you to feel like you at your session if you don’t usually dress up and prefer your chucks to heels, by all means, wear your chucks!
Of course, what you pick to wear depends on what we are documenting, who is involved, and the time of year. If it’s winter, you probably don’t want to wear your bikini by the pool (unless that’s your sort of thing, I don’t judge).
I don’t want you to change your style for me. If you are a hippie, be a hippie. If you live in yoga pants and running shoes? Wear yoga pants and running shoes. This is about you as you. These are general guidelines to get your juices flowing about what in your regular, everyday wardrobe will photograph well. We are aiming to capture you as you are, at this moment. If you have questions or need help, feel free to email me. I am here to help plan your session from start to finish, including giving fashion advice.
Things to think about:
Solid colors photograph well. This doesn’t mean you can’t wear a pattern or your two-year-old can’t wear his favorite Paw Patrol shirt. If there is a pattern you love, wear it!
Think seasonally. If it’s summer, your parka may not translate well unless you keep your house at 48 degrees.
Longer sleeves (think t-shirt or elbow length) work better than tank tops or cap sleeves. Pants or longer skirts/dresses work better, especially since we will be running around, playing games, etc. with a Document Living session.
Similar tones work well for both halves of your body. Think dark jeans and a dark top. White jeans and a light colored top. Same goes for shoes and socks. If you have dark colors on, think dark sock and shoes or vice versa.
Don’t go full-on matchy-matchy. It looks too posed. We aren’t going for a perfect look. We are going for real life. If you want to have cohesiveness, you can wear similar colors. Please don’t have everyone wear jeans and a white top. I promise you, in real life, you would never go out like that.
Do you have any jewelry you wear every day? Be sure to put it on for your session! I wear the same rings every day and feel naked without them. I would, for sure, be wearing those and my earrings for a shoot. I wouldn’t be me without them. Don’t wear jewelry every day? Don’t feel like you have to wear it for our session either!
Scoop or v-necks work well for those of us with short necks while turtle necks or higher collars work for people with long necks. I know I would never be caught dead in a turtle neck but love how they look on other people!
Basically, you know what you like and what looks best on you. Pick something you love, feel comfortable in, and can move about in quickly. This is all about the real you and what makes you feel like you can conquer the world!
